Brimstone Energy, Inc.

Transforming heavy industry by co-producing cement, steel, and critical minerals from a single rock.

Company Profile

The Fourth Great Refinery

Brimstone is on a mission to solve one of the planet's hardest problems: decarbonizing heavy industry. Founded in 2019, the Oakland-based climate tech startup has developed a patented "Rock Refinery" process that co-produces standard Portland cement, steel, aluminum, magnesium, and titanium from a single, globally abundant silicate rock. Unlike traditional cement production, which relies on carbon-heavy limestone, Brimstone's process is carbon-negative and produces no tailings.

The company recently completed successful pilot operations in Oakland and is advancing toward building a commercial manufacturing facility in Reno, Nevada. While a highly publicized $189 million Department of Energy grant was canceled in 2025, Brimstone continues its momentum backed by $55 million in Series A funding led by Breakthrough Energy Ventures and DCVC.

A Culture of Hard Science and High Impact

Brimstone's culture is rooted in rigorous R&D and a deep sense of urgency to address climate change. The team is a multidisciplinary mix of geologists, chemical engineers, materials scientists, and policy experts.

Leadership emphasizes a "first-of-a-kind" mentality, encouraging employees to think beyond incremental improvements and build entirely new industrial processes. Because the company is scaling up from lab to pilot to commercial plant, the environment is highly dynamic and hands-on. Employees often describe the culture as collaborative but demanding, given the monumental technical challenges of reinventing materials production.

What You'll Actually Do

Depending on your role, your day-to-day at Brimstone will look very different.

For Scientists and Engineers, work is deeply technical and often physical. You might be running comminution tests, optimizing chemical processes in the lab, or designing industrial-scale equipment for the Reno facility.

For Operations and Business Development, the focus is on securing partnerships, navigating complex regulatory landscapes, and proving the commercial viability of Brimstone's co-production model to industries that haven't innovated in decades.

Compensation & Benefits

As an early-stage deep tech startup, Brimstone offers a standard startup compensation package that balances competitive base salaries with early-stage equity upside.

While specific salary data is limited publicly, employees generally report satisfactory compensation for the climate tech sector. The company provides standard health benefits, and the real draw for many is the opportunity to own a piece of a company attempting to revolutionize a trillion-dollar industry.

The Interview Process

The interview process at Brimstone is known to be rigorous, focusing heavily on technical fundamentals and alignment with the company's mission.

Candidates can expect a standard initial recruiter screen, followed by deep-dive technical interviews with hiring managers. For engineering and science roles, expect to present past research or projects, answer domain-specific technical questions, and demonstrate an ability to solve unstructured problems. Cultural fit—specifically a passion for decarbonization and resilience in the face of hard technical challenges—is heavily weighted.

Why Join / Why Not

Why Join: If you want to work on a physical product that could legitimately move the needle on global emissions, Brimstone is one of the most ambitious companies in the space. The opportunity to work alongside top-tier scientists and build a "first-of-a-kind" industrial process is unparalleled.

Why Not: This is hard tech. The timelines are long, the technical risks are high, and the recent loss of federal grant funding adds a layer of commercial pressure. If you prefer the rapid iteration cycles of SaaS or are uncomfortable with the inherent uncertainties of scaling physical industrial processes, this might not be the right fit.
