Athena Actuarial Consulting

Boutique actuarial firm providing pension, health, and long-term benefit consulting with a human-centered approach.

Company Profile

A New Kind of Actuarial Firm

Athena Actuarial Consulting is a boutique firm founded in 2020 by a former leader at a "Big 4" firm who had a vision to build something different. Specializing in pension, health, and other post-employment benefits (OPEB), Athena combines rigorous modeling with human insight to help organizations plan for the future. The firm is women-owned and operates with a small, highly skilled team that delivers creative solutions to government, non-profit, and corporate clients.

A Culture of Courage and Empathy

At Athena, actuarial consulting is viewed as more than just calculating risk—it's a lens for reimagining what's possible. The firm's culture is built on core values of being passionate, curious, empathetic, reliable, and courageous partners. Athena emphasizes a people-centered approach, enabling focus and fresh thinking on every project without the burnout or autopilot often found in larger consultancies. The team is encouraged to bring their whole selves to work, ensuring that technical excellence is paired with human understanding.

What You'll Actually Do

As an actuary at Athena, you will play a key role on client teams, taking ownership of your work and collaborating closely with other analysts and lead actuaries. Your day-to-day will involve researching and gathering information, reviewing plan data and financial statements, and creating or maintaining actuarial programs and Excel models. You will also have the opportunity to engage directly with clients, support new business efforts, and participate in strategy meetings. The work covers a range of health actuarial areas, including government-funded programs like Medicaid and Medicare, as well as commercial and employer health plans.

Compensation & Benefits

Athena offers competitive compensation and a comprehensive benefits package designed to support employee well-being. Actuarial Analysts can expect a base salary range of $65K–$77K, while Senior Actuarial Analysts are offered $80K–$90K, both with an annual bonus opportunity. The firm provides 100% employer-paid medical coverage for employees, along with dental, vision, life, and disability insurance. Additional perks include paid time off and holidays, flexible schedule opportunities, paid parental leave, a 401(k) with employer match, and a competitive actuarial exam support program.

The Interview Process

While specific details about the interview process are not publicly available, candidates can expect a process that evaluates both technical skills and alignment with Athena's core values. Given the firm's emphasis on problem-solving, communication, and empathy, interviews likely include behavioral questions alongside technical assessments of actuarial knowledge and proficiency in tools like Excel, SQL, or SAS. The remote-first nature of the firm suggests that interviews are conducted virtually.

Why Join / Why Not

Athena Actuarial Consulting is an excellent fit for actuaries who want to escape the grind of large consultancies and work in a boutique environment that values work-life balance and human connection. The firm offers the opportunity to take ownership of projects, work closely with experienced leaders, and contribute to a growing, mission-driven company. The remote-first model provides flexibility, and the strong benefits package is a significant draw.

However, those looking for the prestige, extensive resources, or structured training programs of a "Big 4" firm might find a boutique setting less appealing. The remote work environment also requires a high degree of independence and self-motivation, which may not suit everyone. Additionally, the focus on specific areas like health and pension consulting may not align with those seeking broader exposure to different actuarial disciplines.
