The behavioral interview is a crucial part of the hiring process at most startups. Unlike technical interviews that test your coding skills, behavioral interviews are designed to assess your soft skills: how you handle challenges, work in a team, and fit into the company culture. And the key to acing these interviews is the STAR method.

By the end of this guide, you’ll be able to craft compelling stories that showcase your skills and experience, and leave a lasting impression on your interviewers.

What is the STAR Method?

The STAR method is a structured way of answering behavioral interview questions by providing a specific, real-life example of a situation you’ve faced. STAR is an acronym that stands for:

  • S - Situation: Describe the context of the situation. What was the challenge you were facing? Who was involved?
  • T - Task: What was your specific role or responsibility in the situation? What was the goal you were trying to achieve?
  • A - Action: What specific actions did you take to address the situation? This is the most important part of your answer, so be detailed and specific.
  • R - Result: What was the outcome of your actions? Quantify your results whenever possible.

20 Example STAR Method Answers

Here are 20 example answers to common behavioral interview questions, tailored for the startup environment:

1. Tell me about a time you had to work with a difficult team member.

  • Situation: In my previous role at a fast-growing e-commerce startup, I was working on a critical project with a tight deadline. One of my team members was consistently missing deadlines and producing subpar work.
  • Task: My task was to find a way to work effectively with this team member to ensure the project was completed on time and to a high standard.
  • Action: I scheduled a one-on-one meeting with the team member to understand their perspective. I learned that they were feeling overwhelmed with their workload and were struggling with some of the technical aspects of the project. I offered to help them with some of their tasks and also connected them with a senior engineer who could provide additional support.
  • Result: By taking a collaborative and supportive approach, I was able to help the team member get back on track. We successfully completed the project on time, and the team member’s performance improved significantly in subsequent projects.

2. Describe a time you had to learn a new skill quickly.

  • Situation: Our startup decided to pivot to a new market, which required us to build a new mobile app using a technology I had no experience with: React Native.
  • Task: I was tasked with leading the development of the new app, which meant I had to learn React Native as quickly as possible.
  • Action: I dedicated my evenings and weekends to learning React Native through online courses and tutorials. I also reached out to a friend who was an experienced React Native developer and asked for their guidance.
  • Result: I was able to learn React Native and lead the development of the new app, which we launched successfully within three months. The app received positive feedback from users and helped the company gain a foothold in the new market.
